Open the door fully to relieve the tension on the hinge springs at each side of the door opening.
Tilt garage door side extension springs adjustment.
Side mounted springs are long heavy springs mounted on each side of the upper garage door track.
The springs extend along the shaft and work by twisting as the garage door closes by means of cables attached to each side of the lowest garage door panel.
To keep the door from falling it must be clamped to hold it in place.
When you help raise the bottom of the door you raise one end of the lever arm.
To adjust your garage door s side mounted springs first open your door fully and secure it in place with a c clamp below the bottom roller.
To be able to adjust the springs the door must be in a position that release the tension on the springs.
As the one piece door opens the extension spring continues to pull down on the lever arm.
Adjust the springs on both sides of the door the same way.
The extension spring pulls on the other end helping the door open.
Install a vertical two by four brace at the outer edge of the door to prevent the door from falling.
This tension makes it easier to lift the garage door from its closed position.
Once the spring is free of tension remove from its track hanger.
You will have to adjust the tension on that side.
If it was opening too quickly move it to the next lower hole.

As the door opens the extension spring contracts and loses its pull.
If you notice a gap on one side it means that one of the springs is putting more force on the door than the other.
Through the use of pulleys they perform the same function as the torsion springs.
For extension springs this is in the up position.
If the door was closing too quickly move the spring to the next higher hole on the bracket.
Secure the door in place before you start actually adjusting the door push it up as far as possible.
Once your garage door is secured remove the spring hook from the track hanger which will allow you to move the hook and adjust the spring s tension.
